問題

  ^1. Here are couple of generalizations about England. ^2. One is that the English are not gifted artistically. ^3. They are not as musical as the Germans or Itaians, painting and sculpture have never flourished in England as they have in France. ^4. Another is that the English are not intellectual. ^5. They have a horror of abstract thought, they feel no need for any philosophy or systematic "world view." ^6. ＊代名詞はできるだけカットする。
＊カットできない場合は「彼」「それ」にするより元の名詞を繰り返した方が良い。

訳文

 イギリスに関する一般論はこうだ。

^2. One is that the English are not gifted artistically.

 まず、イギリス人は芸術的な才能に恵まれていないということだ。

^3. They are not as musical as the Germans or Itaians, painting and sculpture have never flourished in England as they have in France.

イギリス人はドイツ人やイタリア人ほどには音楽性はなく、絵画や彫刻はフランスほどには栄えなかった。

^4. Another is that the English are not intellectual.

 また一つには、イギリス人は理知的ではないということだ。

^5. They have a horror of abstract thought, they feel no need for any philosophy or systematic "world view."

イギリス人は抽象的な考えに対して恐怖を抱き、哲学や体系的な世界観には必要性を感じない。

^6. Nor is this because they are "practical" as they are so fond of claiming for themselves.

これは、イギリス人が自ら好んで主張するほど実用的でないからではない。

教訓

代名詞についてのレッスンはクリアできた。
最後の6文目を後ろから訳してしまったが、テキストでは前から訳していて、結果として2文に分かれている。なるほどー。

しかしイギリス人がartisticでないとは。。ElgarやHolstがいるではないか！
