 幼い子どもを相手にしなければならない人は、同情しすぎることは間違いであるとじきに気付く。

^2. A child that invariably receives sympathy will continue to cry over a tiny mishap; the ordinary self-control of the average adult is only achieved through knowledge that no sympathy will be won by making a fuss.

 常に同情される子どもは、ほんの些細なことでも、嫌なことがある度に泣くようになってしまう。平均的な大人であれば持っているはずの普通の自制心を身につけるためには、騒ぎ立てても同情は得られないということを知るしかない。

 教訓

1、2の文どちらも、冒頭のところは「～な人」「～な子ども」ではなく、仮定法が隠れていると思って訳した方が良い。
「子どもの相手をしていればすぐ気付くが、～」「子どもは、いつも同情されていると、～」といった具合に。
